Counselling in London

Are you looking for a safe space to get to know yourself a little better and to understand your needs and desires? Then counselling may be for you.

Counselling is a form of talking therapy that helps you to process your thoughts, feelings and emotions. Led by a trained counsellor, your sessions will be unique and tailored to you, helping you along your journey of self-healing and self-empowerment.

What Are the Benefits of Counselling?

For many, the safe, confidential and nurturing environment created by counselling is one of its greatest benefits. Normally, we may worry some people will judge us or share our secrets. Perhaps we feel guarded and be unable to trust our darkest truths with our closest friends. Some people are nervous about the knock-on effects of opening up as they fear discussions may affect relationships and connections. But with the right person and in a safe space, the old catechism “a problem shared is a problem halved” holds up during counselling. Ultimately,  we all feel infinitely better once we talk through our fears and anxieties.

Talking to a counsellor is different from speaking with other people. They’re skilled listeners who know how to ease you into the safe space of the session, so you feel free to explore your feelings and ideas. They are an impartial party — so your relationship with your counsellor is always unbiased, open, and considered. It’s important to understand, however, that your counsellor will be unlikely to provide you with concrete advice or a clear checklist of how to overcome your issues. Instead, imagine your experiences as a journey to self-enlightenment where, through regular sessions, you begin to understand yourself better.

But that’s not to say counselling doesn’t offer a range of other benefits. Counselling can help you to cope with:

  • Depression and mental lethargy
  • Anxiety and stress-related disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Infertility
  • Bereavement and grief
  • Relationships and interpersonal connections
  • Work-related issues
  • Self-confidence

What to Expect from a Counselling Session?

Your counselling will depend on what type of session you’ve opted for. It will also depend upon your specific needs and who your sessions are with. A counselling session may take place in a variety of ways, including:

  • In-person
  • In a group
  • Over the phone
  • Via email
  • Online via live chat services

In general, though, your sessions will begin with an initial consultation. This session allows you to discuss your current lifestyle, diet, medical history and what you desire from your treatment. For some, these initial conversations can be uncomfortable and probing but don’t be put off. They’re an invaluable chance for you and your counsellor to get to know each other and build trust and understanding. The initial session also offers you the opportunity to ask questions about your treatment and what to expect from your sessions.

In the subsequent sessions, your therapist will ask you to discuss your feelings and emotions without judgement or criticism. Through talking therapy and exercises, you will work with your therapist to gain control over your thoughts, fears and limitations — leaving you free to lead your healthiest and happiest life.
