Autogenic Training in London

Have you ever experienced heart palpitations, sweaty palms or butterflies in your stomach? Does your stress manifest as a rock-like feeling in your gut or sensations of nausea? Well, you have your natural fight-or-flight response to thank for that. Back in the times of our cave-dwelling ancestors, the fight-or-flight reflex was essential — it protected our ancestors from all the many and very real dangers that threatened their existence. But today, our world is full of triggering stimulus and our bodies are constantly cycling through fight-or-flight reflexes. The result? We feel burnt out, worn down and stressed!

Autogenic training is a drug-free way of reducing the physical and emotional effects of this stress. Using a series of relaxation techniques, it helps you to gain body awareness and rewire your automatic stress responses. In many ways, it is a Western equivalent to traditional meditation without the spiritual and cultural aspects.

Whether you’re struggling with a stress condition or are simply looking to improve the way you manage the stresses and strains of daily life, autogenic training can help you to restore emotional balance and mental clarity.

What Are the Benefits of Autogenic Training?

Known to cure a range of stress-related disorders, autogenic training is broadly considered an effective treatment and is even available on the NHS. Not only does autogenic training help to calm the mind, ease anxiety and revive the spirit, but it also has a range of benefits for your physical health, such as:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Eased pain
  • Reduced night sweats
  • Improved sleep quantity and quality
  • Weight loss

What to Expect from an Autogenic Training Session

As with many other types of alternative therapy, your autogenic training will begin with a consultation and personal assessment. During this, your therapist will take time to discuss your medical history, your goals for the treatment and any other information about your general health and wellbeing that might be relevant to your treatment. The more information you share, the better your therapist will be able to curate your personal treatment plan, so don’t be shy!

If you have been referred from treatment by your GP or are receiving treatment for an issue on the NHS, your therapist will work closely with your GP or physician. But whether you’ve been referred or not, your session will be 100% tailored to you and what you need from the session.

Because each session is unique, no two treatment plans will be the same. But as a general rule of thumb, you can expect to receive a series of exercises that focus on a different bodily function. Normally designed to be taken as a course over a series of weeks, autogenic training is premised on the following key formulas:

  • Focus on the weight in the arms and legs
  • Focus on the warmth in the arms and legs
  • Focus on the heaviness in the heart
  • Focus on the breath
  • Focus on the abdomen
  • Focus on the coolness in the forehead

Each session will target one of these formulas and use a series of six standard exercises. Once you’ve mastered one formula, it’s on to the next. And the best part is that once you've mastered the techniques, you can take them with you wherever you go.

Don’t let stress dictate your life — book an autogenic training session today.
